The job

The job is always simple

TrashWorks work order

Expected hazard: minor coastal flooding

Crew: human

Quoted price: suspiciously low

  • Get the water out of here.
  • Get water over there.
  • Keep this area dry.
  • Stop the lava reaching this.
  • Restore the river.

How you do it is up to you. There is never just one way.

Terrain

Reshape the ground

Dig trenches, pile up berms and move dirt wherever the plan needs it. Every shovel changes where the water goes next.

Water and lava

Watch it respond

Water runs downhill, fills every hole and follows your channels. Pump it up and spray it somewhere better. Dirt walls hold until the water wears them down. And where water meets lava, the lava turns to stone.

Consequences

Your fix makes a new problem

  1. You dig a trench to drain the village.
  2. It works. Everyone celebrates.
  3. The trench is sending the water at the road.
  4. Your friend builds a wall to stop it.
  5. Now the field is flooding.
  6. Someone pumps it out and opens a breach.
  7. The current takes a crew member. And their shovel.

Well… now what?

Nobody is sabotaging anyone. Everyone is helping, in the same world. And a flooded village isn't game over. It's the next problem.

Your crew

Talk it out

Up to four friends on one job site. Half the fun is what you shout.

  • Come here.
  • Stop digging!
  • Wait, I have an idea.
  • What did you do?
  • Run.
Proximity voice
Nearby crew hear you. Distance does the rest.
Walkie-talkie
Grab the radio to reach the other side of the site.
Megaphone
For when the whole valley needs to hear it.

Conditions

The weather has other plans

Not every job has a disaster. Some are just digging with friends. When one is coming, you'll see it: storm clouds, a distant rumble, a TrashWorks weather advisory.

  • Rain

Runoff everywhere. Holes fill up and dirt walls soften.

  • Sandstorm

You can barely see, and fresh sand fills your channels.

  • Volcanic activity

New lava, new hazards, new routes.

  • A new leak

Another water source your plan didn't count on.

Disasters can be resources too.

  1. "We need stone."
  2. Everyone looks at the volcano.
  3. Then at the water sprayer.
  4. "No."

Job complete

Get the job done

Somehow, the plan holds. Then you get to see what you did.

  • Flooded Drained
  • Blocked river Flowing
  • Lava flow Contained
  • Broken landscape Working again

The crew

Hardworking, affordable and, according to the paperwork, entirely human. TrashWorks takes the jobs nobody else will, for a price nobody questions.

Where it comes from

Muckworks started as a childhood dream. I played From Dust and wanted to be in that world, not floating above it. I wanted to be down on the ground with a shovel while the river changes course around my feet.

It's also every afternoon at the beach. You dig a channel, the sea finds it, your sandcastle wall holds for exactly one wave, and then it doesn't. That feeling of shaping the ground and watching water decide what happens next is the whole game. Now it's with your friends, and the sandcastle is a village.

For fans of

  • R.E.P.O.
  • PEAK
  • Lethal Company
  • Chained Together

And anyone who loved From Dust.

I studied how those games turn simple controls into chaos between friends. Muckworks does it with the ground itself.
